Man in sports
Our man at the NBA GAMES: Homer Sayson.
Are you a football or basketball fan? in what is quite a rare occasion, the NBA finals is played at about the same time the World Cup is played in Germany.
For this basketball-crazy nation, it's no doubt basketball that most people are going to be watching soon. But here in Cebu, the World Cup is getting a lot of attention too. A number of hotels and bars are showing World Cup games in large screens.
There are a lot of football converts i notice in Cebu. But i wonder when will we ever send someone to cover a World Cup game. Former Sports editor and Don Bosco football coach Jack Biantan who is now based in London would be the best guy to be given that assignment. But for now, it's basketball that's the toast of this nation. So, it's Homer Sayson in the coming days reporting from the United States. His sixth, straight.

Sports Page
A feature beside the main headline is common among American newspapers. In the Philippines, it isn't so. Editors are obsessed with the straight news presentation. Hasn't anybody heard of news features? If ever a newspaper comes up with one, it usually is packaged like a news story. Uggggghhhhhhh, take me out of here. Here are some sports pages i did for Sun.Star with Sports editor Jobanni Tabada.

Sleek tabloid
Who says a tabloid has to be tacky? Blurring the definition of what is tabloid, here we package Superbalita as sleek, without necessarily departing from the substance of the newspaper. It instead makes the paper look more credible and appealing to a new market - the AB market who used to snub the tabloid. Proof of the pudding is in the eating, right? Circulation has reached 50,000, the largest so far in the history of newspapering in Cebu. Content + look spell success for this Cebu tabloid.
